English IV: English for College Success Syllabus

Email: [email protected]
Required Materials:
Textbooks:
Reading: We will be using “Ten Steps to Advance Reading Skills” by John Langan, “Advancing Vocabulary Skills (4th Edition)” by Sherrie L. Nist, and additional various texts throughout the year.
Note: Textbooks will be used in class and not checked out to students. Any student who needs a book checked out (either for the year or for overnight to complete work) will be allowed to check out a book. The Literature book is available online and directions can be found on my website for accessing it.
Course Objectives:
English for College Success classes are designed to cover the standards required by the state, as well as provide an intense focus on specific standards. You may view these standards online at http://www.floridastandards.org/index.aspx. We will be covering the common core standards in classes this year.
Class Expectations:
I expect each of my students to show respect for others and themselves. Each member of class will participate, cooperate with each other, and give their full attention to the task at hand. I expect you to actively engage in the learning process. If you give minimum effort, you will not do well in this class.
Novel Work: Students need to read independently outside of class. I will not require a reading log to verify reading; however, research shows that increased time reading for pleasure increases performance on standardized reading tests. Additionally, students will be required to read 1 assigned novel each grading period.
DBQ Work: This is a program that our school has adopted that is a critical reading and writing assignment. The students will do one project each grading period. You can see my website for further information about the Document Based Question (DBQ) Assignments.
Late Assignments Policy:
If you miss a day of school and therefore miss an assignment, you will have the number of days absent plus one to turn in the missed work. Work that was assigned prior to your absence and due the day you were gone will be due upon returning to class. I DO NOT TAKE LATE WORK. Please keep up with your assignments. If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to get the assignments you missed and get caught up with the work.
