ENGLISH III FINAL EXAM
TAKE HOME COMPONENT
Directions: You will be expected to complete this portion of your final exam outside of class. Each writing assignment will be worth 25% of your final exam grade for the semester. An in-class exam will comprise the other 50% of your final exam (that means you cannot pass without doing this portion of the test!). Again, you must complete BOTH of the writing assignments below. You may hand write or type the essays. These assignments will be DUE OCTOBER 16th.
WRITING ASSIGNMENT #1
Write an essay in which you analyze contrasting world views as they are portrayed in the textbook selections we read during the first grading period. You need to clearly demonstrate how early American values shaped the societal and political ideals of the developing nation and how those values and ideals compared with other countries’ values and ideals. Use MLA style in text citation and include relevant quotes from at least three different selections from the textbook (honors students must include at least five quotes from at least three different sources and one of the sources must be The Scarlett Letter). Your writing must make a claim, support the claim with evidence from the texts, and have a thoughtful conclusion that reminds the reader of your claim.
WRITING ASSIGNMENT #2
Using “Walden,” “Civil Disobedience,” and “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” as primary texts, write an essay in which you analyze the author’s use of rhetoric and style in developing the theme of personal responsibility. You must use MLA style in text citation and include relevant quotes from two of the three of the selections mentioned as well as one additional quote from another selection we read in the second grading period. That is a total of 3 quotes from three different sources (honors students must include at least five quotes from the selections read in class). Your writing must make a claim, support the claim with evidence from the texts, and have a thoughtful conclusion that reminds the reader of your claim.
Rubric:
15 pts. Grammar and Mechanics
15 pts. Thesis/Claim
50 pts. Support/Quotes
10 pts. MLA in text citation formatting
10 pts. Presentation
You can access the entire textbook online by clicking on the textbook tab at the top of the page. The directions to register and view the textbook are there. Remember the 11th grade book is the gold book.
