AVID BINDERS
Why do we use the AVID binders?
If you have looked at the AVID binder, you may think it is a cumbersome and unnecessary requirement. However, research has shown that this organizational skill has been instrumental in the academic success of students beyond their current school year. Plus, you can easily find parent information and homework right in the front pocket without digging through mounds of papers.
What is the AVID binder?
The AVID binder is a three-ringed collection of academic essentials, including Cornell notes, planning sheets, learning logs, class assignments, a pouch of required tools (highlighters, pens, pencils, etc.), all carefully divided and organized. AVID students should take great pride in their binders, our teachers grade them weekly and use them as a means to reinforce organization and planning.
When will it be checked?
The binders are checked weekly on a rotating basis between all the different subject areas which include: Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Math, and Electives.
How will it be checked?
Teachers use the school wide rubric to grade the binders. It is attached below and includes a description of the required elements and a copy of the actual grading rubric used by all teachers. Teachers count these binder checks in their classrooms in various ways, but they are entered into grade books by all teachers. How much of a grade and into which category is up to the individual teacher.
